A New Vision for Southeast Midland: How an Entrepreneurial Center Could Shape the City's Future

When people think about growth in Midland, they often picture new neighborhoods, restaurants, or shopping centers. The Midland Development Corporation (MDC), in partnership with The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB), is working toward creating a new Entrepreneurial Center in Southeast Midland. Rather than simply constructing another office building, the vision is to create a place where ideas become businesses, dreams become careers, and local entrepreneurs have the resources they need to succeed.

More Than a Building

The proposed center would serve as a launchpad for aspiring business owners, inventors, tradespeople, and small business operators throughout Midland. Community leaders envision a facility where entrepreneurs can receive one-on-one mentoring, attend educational workshops, connect with experienced business professionals, and gain access to tools that many startups simply cannot afford on their own.

Instead of expecting entrepreneurs to figure everything out themselves, the center aims to provide guidance through every stage of business development—from refining an idea and creating a business plan to understanding financing, marketing, operations, and long-term growth.

Listening Before Building

One aspect that makes this project unique is the approach being taken before construction even begins.

Rather than designing a facility first and hoping the community uses it, MDC and UTPB plan to spend the next year engaging directly with Southeast Midland residents. Through kickoff events, community discussions, and a 10-week accelerator program based on the nationally recognized CO.STARTERS curriculum, organizers want to learn what types of businesses residents hope to create and what resources entrepreneurs actually need.

This community-first strategy means the center can be tailored specifically to Midland instead of following a generic model used elsewhere.

Many successful businesses begin with a simple idea, but turning that idea into reality often requires guidance, funding, and connections.

The Entrepreneurial Center could help future restaurant owners, boutique retailers, service companies, technology startups, construction businesses, healthcare providers, artisans, and countless other entrepreneurs find the support they need to grow.

The project also complements programs already making an impact in Midland, including the Midland Entrepreneurial Challenge, which provides coaching, business education, and up to $500,000 in funding for promising local businesses each year. Together, these efforts create a stronger pipeline for innovation and small business success.
